After marriage in Spain, parents will have to decide on the issue of vaccinations.
The majority of foreign citizens who marry in Spain plan to have children in the future. Often, spouses already have children from a previous marriage. Sooner or later, the question of vaccinations for children and how best to organize the vaccination process arises.
Spain complies with European standards
Spain, as a member of the European Union, carries out vaccination in the country in accordance with European standards. Unlike other European countries, Spain has a limited set of mandatory vaccinations. There are standard vaccination programs, and parents can decide for themselves whether their child should be vaccinated and how best to do it.
Currently, Spain has a centralized vaccination program. It has replaced the regional program, in which each autonomous region established its own set and schedule of vaccinations. It is worth noting that the first vaccination is given to infants in the maternity hospital, and the main vaccination is carried out during the first year of life.
Compulsory vaccinations in Spain are free. Parents can also buy vaccines against other diseases that are not included in the official vaccination schedule. In this case, they buy the drugs at the pharmacy and then go to the local clinic.
If the parents are responsible
As mentioned, parents in Spain are given the right to decide how many and what vaccinations to give their child. They can use the basic set of vaccinations that the pediatrician offers. At the parents’ request, vaccinations can be given in small doses several times. It is also possible to postpone vaccinations for several months if the child is in poor health. It is worth noting that not all Spanish pediatricians support such vaccination schemes. In this case, it may be necessary to find a specialist who is committed to a light vaccination scheme.
If the child was not born in Spain, but moved to the country after the mother’s marriage, parents may need proof that the child has been vaccinated when entering kindergarten. There are no such requirements at school. To avoid problems with the kindergarten, it is recommended to obtain a vaccination card from your clinic, form 063u. This card or a notarized copy must have an apostille. If the card is not apostilled, it may not be accepted at the kindergarten.
