Is Valencia the best city for residence permit holders in Spain?
The study, published annually by InterNations, ranked Valencia, Spain, as the world’s best city for foreigners to live. More than 15 thousand expats participated in this study, analyzing life in 66 cities around the world. It is worth noting that the study was conducted before the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to Valencia, the top ten included three more Spanish cities.

Spanish cities scored highly on indicators such as adaptation and quality of life. Indicators related to employment and career opportunities were lower. It’s remarkable that Barcelona, long considered one of the most popular cities for expats in Europe, only ranked 25th on the list, due to its high cost of living by both Spanish and European standards.
Valencia was named the best city in the world for quality of life in a study that included representatives of 173 nationalities living in 181 countries. Valencia received the highest scores in four of the five main criteria.
As it turned out, 94% of foreign residents of Valencia commented positively on the affordability of living costs, while the global figure for this indicator is only 46%. More than 90% of respondents rated the city’s healthcare system as easily accessible, well above the global average of 74%. Thanks to these results, Valencia took first place in the Health and Environment category.
One of the advantages of Valencia is its unique climate. The city ranked second in climate indicators, surpassing many other regions of Andalusia. Expats appreciate the large number of sunny days and the sea breeze, which helps reduce summer temperatures to 32-35 degrees, while in other regions it can exceed 40 degrees.
Valencia also ranks fourth in the Leisure and Entertainment category. This is due to the presence of beaches located right in the city, opportunities for water sports, and the presence of many parks and cycling routes.
According to the study, 84% of foreign residents of Valencia reported easy adaptation to the local culture, compared to a global figure of 61%. More than 90% of respondents also reported that local residents were friendly towards them.
In general, foreign residents have a positive view of the quality of life and accessibility of Valencia. However, the city, like other Spanish cities, scored poorly in the Jobs and Careers category. Expats living in Valencia expressed dissatisfaction with career opportunities and the difficulty of finding a job.
